Just recently found this site and like what I've seen. First half of my 2 item bucket list was to buy big Harley cruiser. I have ridden bikes for many years but could never afford the bike of my dreams. Now retired, so my social security checks for the next coupla years will pay for the bike. Did that last month. 2nd half is to ride 66 solo. Starting that August 24, 2015. Doing a little planning but mainly gonna do it on the fly. Have a few books and have checked some websites but plan to figure it out as I go.

My main question is how and where to find the best map to stay on the Mother Road as much as possible. Since I'll be on a bike and solo, most of what I've seen will be too complicated to ride and follow by myself efficiently. Is there any GPS or similar that would help me?

I plan to take 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica, then up Pacific Coast Highway, then back home to PA somehow - maybe on Lincoln Highway but the return trip is even less planned than the westbound part. I'm planning on perhaps 2 months for the entire trip.

I'd appreciate any advice on my Q of gps or similar mapping for a solo motorcycle rider.

Thanks.
Bruce

Hi my name is Lorraine and I am starting my planning for my route 66 drive. When I was younger my father would pack the family up and drive on a two week vacation and most of it was on route 66 so I would like to drive it myself now that I'm older and I hope I could get some great ideas and advice from the site.

My name is Ian James and reside in Preston, Lancashire (UK). Just decided with wife to undertake the trip of a lifetime and as we were both keen motorcyclists thought that Route 66 would be great. It was a toss up between Route 66 and Thailand, Route 66 won and due to slight arthritis have decided to do it over 3 weeks (18 Days on route 66) Any suggestions on itinerary along with hotels/motels would be very much appreciated? Speak soon, IanJames

Hi everyone,

Pam from Brisbane Australia. My 16 year old son graduates high school in November and for his graduation gift he chose to drive route 66. We will be driving in early December 2015. Starting from San Francisco though and driving down through Vegas and joining from there on as we are visiting friends up north first.

Just starting planning. Have booked a car to pick up leaving San Francisco on 28 November planning to finish trip around 12 December. Beyond that no plans at this stage.

Bill from Fredericksburg, Virginia.

My wife and I have recently retired from teaching. One of my loves is 'adventures' ("All anyone really needs is a good adventure"). We have just recently completed a 9000 mile, 4+ week road trip that took us from Virginia to Chicago, down Route 66 to Flagstaff and then north to Seattle. We made the return trip along the norther tier US and Canada.

The trip along 66 was fascinating and was easily my favorite part. We stayed at Boots Court and Blue Swallow motels and had a ball. Despite turning north at Flagstaff to see the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon national parks, I would much rather have gone on to complete the whole route to Santa Monica!

Next year... ;)

Hi Groovers

I'm from Fife on the sunny east coast of Scotland.
My wife and I are planning a trip along Route 66 to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary.
Just starting the process of planning...but not too much planning. Plans are to book the digs at either end, a vehicle I want to bike it, Mrs C wants a convertible), flights to and from the USA, and busk it from Chicago to Santa Monica.
Already see some valuable info on this website, will be a regular visitor here before we hit the road.

Hi all - welcome to the site!
Have a browse - if there's something you can't find just ask in the forums, and if there's anything you think is missing or would really be useful then just let me know Smile

Drove Route 66 in August 2007 - hope to do it again one day in the not too distant future.

Hi Steve,

I'm Murray and recently drove Route 66 over six weeks from June - August 2015. Loved every minute of it too!

Before I left, I used this site many times to glean information and ended up downloading Wotacroc's excellent spreadsheet. I have (with respect) taken it upon myself to make some repairs to the spreadsheet (correct locations, attraction sequence, spelling mistakes, adding worthwhile attractions, and commenting on ones that are now gone).

If this is of any value to anyone, I don't ask for any credit, just please let me know where I can send it to you so you may upload to the site if you wish. It's just my way of saying thank you and giving a little back :-)

I apologise for using the forum, but note there doesn't seem any other way to contact you!

Regards

Murray

Bill,

We live down the road near Leesburg, and are planning to go on a Corvette roadtrip to Route 66 next spring with the Battelfield Corvette Club of your town. Would like to hook up with you and go over your experiences as it would us in our planning. How do I contact you?

Hello everyone. I am member of the Historic66.com message board and came here because their forum appears to down. I drove parts of the route between Chicago and Springfield IL. Also did the stretch between Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Hope to do the full stretch from Chicago to Los Angeles next summer.

Hi all

My name is John and those from the UK will probably realise I am from Sunderland in the North East.
I have made a couple of trips to the USA in the past 2 years and have driven much of the Pacific Highway between San Francisco and San Diego. Only wish I had done it sooner.

The dream is now to drive Route 66, and I am sure that this site will help me with the planning.

I am sure I will be asking loads of question.

Regards
John

Hello john.....seems we're in a similar position. We've done various European road trips, i.e. france, Spain from the UK and have visited the US a couple of times and driven round a wee bit. But we're planning Route 66 (East to West) in September 2016. We can keep abreast of all things 66 on here in the forthcoming months and swap road experiences maybe. Good luck with the planning...ciao for now.

Hi folks, my name's Steve and I live in Wales, in the UK.

In August 2007 my wife and I took the trip of a lifetime driving the full length of Route 66, from Chicago to LA, over the course of three weeks. The idea for the trip followed a conversation with a work colleague just weeks after her mother did the Route on a coach-trip. Although neither my wife or I had ever visited the USA before the decision to drive the old road was spontaneous. Although, at that point, we had no idea about the history or geography of Route 66 we found the simple idea of a road trip in a new country exciting enough.

We were full of enthusiasm and keen to start planning our trip. We wanted to look at maps, watch videos, see photos, research attractions, look into accommodation, plan side trips... basically we wanted to start the journey then and there! Planning the trip wasn't a chore, it was the simply the first leg of an incredible experience that neither of us will ever forget.

We loved planning our road trip so much and found it an integral part of the experience. For that reason I decided to create this website. I hope that it can be of use to others in planning their own Route 66 experience. My aim is for the site to constantly grow and expand as people continue to recommend their own favourite motels/attractions. The forum should be a place for seasoned Route 66 travellers and newcomers alike to share their own experiences or ask questions of others. Each Route 66 experience is unique and, as I have only driven it the once, I don’t claim to be an expert in the old road by any means - but I do hope that this website and it’s community of users can provide free, useful and up-to-date information to anyone driving America's greatest road trip... The legendary Route 66.

I hope that you join, and enjoy being part of, our developing “Driving Route 66” community,

Steve Bellamy

Hi! We are from South Africa and having been planning a trip to USA for 5 years!!! Waiting for our youngest grandson to reach 'Disney ' age! The year has arrived! We are planning to arrive 7 December ( in SA) December is our longest break for the 3boys! So, 7 of us....Disney for a week and then we have three weeks to see as much as we can! We love the idea of using two RV's and doing the Route 66! Reading some of the posts I am concerned that we might face 'winter' shut down ? Any comments?
