Hi there - we go 28th April 2015 - we are 4 guys from the UK - LA to Chicago - looking for a few places where we could play as we are a band. Any ideas welcome?
Doing it in a red 57 chevy - or hope to assuming it goes all the way.

Thanks for the reply - I think we will try door stepping a few small bars nears where we are staying - whats the worst that can happen!

Thank you WillC, you've been a great help. July it will be, and as my wife just pointed out, we cannot go at any other time because she is a school teacher and that's her summer break too!

Hello. For years I have wanted to drive old Route 66 (what's left of it) and I'm just interested in learning everything I can about the drive. I'll be driving on my own, though it would be nice to have someone along to share the experience with. I'm 66 years old and retired. Don't have tons of money to spend on vacationing, so the price of gas, wear and tear on my car, and food/lodging is something I'd like more info on. Any thoughts?

Hi IndyRN. Interested to read your post. You and I have the same ambition - to drive 66 at the age of 66. I don't have any information for you as I haven't done it yet, but I'll be reading the replies you receive, which will hopefully help me too!
For me, this a once in a lifetime trip. I won't get a second chance as I have to begin by flying from London to Chicago before even getting in a car.
Good luck with your venture. Let us know how you get on.
When do you plan to do the trip?

Hi, my name is Larry, I am in the process of restoring or at least getting a 64 chevy c-10 worthy of route 66. Was wondering if there are guides, books or other websites to get me where I want to go

Hi There.......I live in the Nashville Tennessee Area and I love to drive old cars on great roads. I have about worn out the natchez Trace Parkway and the Blue Ridge Parkway, and I am now interested in planning some trips down Route 66. I am currently planning a trip in the next several months and look forward to learning all that I can. I have read many of the Route 66 books, but I am still trying to develop a specific trip plan. I look forward to learning from those who have already travelled this great road.

Which did you prefer: Natchez Trace Parkway or Blue Ridge Parkway? I guess both are very different. I've driven the Skyline Drive and Route 66. I enjoyed the Skyline Drive but it can't even begin to compare to Route 66. The views were stunning though!

Hi All. We live in London and are planning to drive Route 66 in the summer of 2016 and thought we'd give ourselves some breathing room by starting planning early. I have wanted to do the drive for many years now, but now our son has turned 13 and has a real passion for cars, especially American cars, and this is something that the whole family would enjoy now. I thought at first it might be easiest to go with one of the holiday companies that gives you a car and sets up accommodation for you along the way, but they charge quite a lot of money and I decided in any case it would be more fun to plan the whole thing ourselves. Any general advice to kick us off would be very gratefully received. Cheers!

Hi woodle, I'm glad you've chosen to plan the journey yourself - it'll give you much more flexibility. Have you checked out the FAQ pages? There's a lot of info there to get you started. I'd recommend taking a look before you get bogged down in specifics. Planning is great fun though so feel free to ask as many questions as you'd like Smile

My name is Scott Piotrowski, a resident of the Los Angeles area and Route 66 preservationist for going on 20 years now. Even though I'm now on the Board of the California Historic Route 66 Association, my area of expertise ends at the Los Angeles County line. However, anything that you want to know about 66 in LA don't hesitate to ask - I can either give the answer straight away or get it from the many preservationists, authors, artists, and Angelinos that I know that love the Route!

Hi all,

We are driving Route 66, starting in Chicago on the 4th of May and ending of course in LA, where our daughter lives. This will be our third road trip since she married a Californian and emigrated from the UK around six years ago, so I blame her!

Flights booked, car booked and a total of 14 hotels booked. We are also taking in Memphis and Monument Valley. I will have a good look around this forum and hopefully pick up some good tips. Shame that I only just found it!!

I've decided I no longer want to be an adult. If anyone needs me, I'll be on the beach building sandcastles.

Father and Son drove the Route 66 back in 2013, from Shamrock, TX to Santa Monica.
This year we are going back in October to complete the route, from Chicago to Oklahoma.

Check our itinerary and comment in this other thread https://www.drivingroute66.com/forum/on-the-road/were-ready-to-go-chicago-oklahoma/

About Driving Route 66

What started as a record of my personal Route 66 experience has grown into an active community of Route 66 veterans and newcomers alike. This website relies entirely on the experiences of its users so please feel free to recommend your own personal favourites.

Every Route 66 road trip is unique, and this site is in no way intended to be a definitive guide to the old road. However, I sincerely hope it offers a starting point to anyone planning their own Route 66 vacation.
