hi everyone ...
paul here ..

planning to do the great mother road about the 20th September ..thought I would introduce myself to everybody !! hi ..
Found myself with 12 days of holiday left for this year ..so I thought , lets do it ! will be doing this trip on my own , so its a little bit daunting ! one of my first worries is the sheer volume of driving ? any advice from anybody would be greatly appreciated ..if I throw some worries in the room , any replies would be great !
1. east to west or west to east ?
2. flights ..is there a site that's good for tailoring your flight ..ie Manchester to chicago then los angeles to Manchester !
3. car hire .. best place to find a car / is there a massive charge for pick up car at chicago drop off at los angeles
4. is there a site where you can find someone to share the trip/ journey with ?
any advice on these would be greatly appreciated ! paul from Manchester

Hi there I'm Seán and myself and a friend have always said we'd do Route 66 before we're 30. With that being 2 years away we figured we'd fit it in next year. Planning on going August 2015 and intend on doing as much research between now and then as possible to squeeze every bit out of it as we possibly can. Starting in Chicago, finishing in Los Angeles and fitting in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon somewhere along the way. I've been looking around the site already and it seems like a great resource which I intend on making great use of.

Hey all - new to forum . Not sure when I'm going to do it , but I'm here to get as much insight as I can so I don't miss a thing . It'll most likely be a month long trek when I go . Thanks for letting me pick your brains , lol . What time of year is the favorite of those on here - Spring , Summer , Fall ? Thanks .

Lamar here...
Planning trip for May to early June. Will be doing western half of 66 in 2016. While in CA will also see the Redwood forest. My plan is to fly into either LA or Dallas and do a roundtrip to save on car rental. I'm looking for two more people interested in going on this trip with me, and willing to share the expenses. This would be about a 3 week trip. There is plenty of time to come up with an itinerary that will be make all happy. [email protected] is the best contact for me. Put Route 66 for the topic line.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Ned and I live just south of Wichita, Kansas. My hobby is playing with Corvairs. I have restored several and even raced one for a few years. I currently use one as my daily driver.

Living very close to Route 66, I've had the opportunity to travel on it frequently. I've been on the piece between the MO state line and Oklahoma City mostly. I'm planning to drive a Corvair from Chicago to CA in 16 if life permits.

Hi,

I'm Oscar from Costa Rica. I interested in Route 66 when I saw Cars the movie. I will be traveling to Las Vegas and Los Angeles the next days and I'm planning to do a partial of the route, expecting some day to do all the trip.

Nice to read you,

My name is Steve. Recently retired and planning to make "the drive" Will be leaving from here (North of Boston MA.) In my MOPAR11 dodge Charger. This will be my first trek driving this distance. I'm planning on taking about three weeks this time out. I expect I will be making another lengthy drive next summer to see more of the U.S. My wife and I are currently planning on stopping at just a few of the attractions and will most likely return next year for more. I'll be back here with an update around the end of October.

Hi All
driving the iconic Route 66 in early June 2015, starting off in San Franciso, spending two weeks doing the drive and ending up in Fairfax, Virginia
I'm aware neither my start or finish is on Route 66, just starting to do my research now.
Questions
If there a SD card for garmin satnav available for the route
Also anyone aware of bowling alleys in towns on the route, have a tournament in Fairfax after the road trip

An e-mail from Geoff reminded me that I had not been on the site in months, for which I apologize. I am simply swamped with other work, including (but not limited to) my photography website. Input from Driving Route 66 members led to http://www.rt66pix.com/travel which answers frequently-posed questions here and offers a suggested trip itinerary. It was written to incorporate NON-North Americans.

For those of you who have already "done" Rt 66, there are several other American trips that are related and fascinating in their own way. They include the Erie Canal (from Albany-Buffalo New York) and the National Road or Cumberland Road (from Cumberland Maryland to Vandalia Illinois). I'm currently processing images from both and a couple hundred are on the site above.

I hope to rejoin the discussion here later...and hope to travel the Mother Road again next year.

We've missed you, Frank. Make sure you post more in the future when you have more time.

I'd love to see your photos of the Erie Canal and Cumberland Road.

I recently drove the Skyline Drive with my wife. Beautiful views in late October.
