Hi folks, my name's Steve and I live in Wales, in the UK.

In August 2007 my wife and I took the trip of a lifetime driving the full length of Route 66, from Chicago to LA, over the course of three weeks. The idea for the trip followed a conversation with a work colleague just weeks after her mother did the Route on a coach-trip. Although neither my wife or I had ever visited the USA before the decision to drive the old road was spontaneous. Although, at that point, we had no idea about the history or geography of Route 66 we found the simple idea of a road trip in a new country exciting enough.

We were full of enthusiasm and keen to start planning our trip. We wanted to look at maps, watch videos, see photos, research attractions, look into accommodation, plan side trips... basically we wanted to start the journey then and there! Planning the trip wasn't a chore, it was the simply the first leg of an incredible experience that neither of us will ever forget.

We loved planning our road trip so much and found it an integral part of the experience. For that reason I decided to create this website. I hope that it can be of use to others in planning their own Route 66 experience. My aim is for the site to constantly grow and expand as people continue to recommend their own favourite motels/attractions. The forum should be a place for seasoned Route 66 travellers and newcomers alike to share their own experiences or ask questions of others. Each Route 66 experience is unique and, as I have only driven it the once, I don’t claim to be an expert in the old road by any means - but I do hope that this website and it’s community of users can provide free, useful and up-to-date information to anyone driving America's greatest road trip... The legendary Route 66.

I hope that you join, and enjoy being part of, our developing “Driving Route 66” community,

Steve Bellamy

I'm Frank Gifford, the photographer behind the new site https://www.rt66pix.com.  It officially launches January 1, 2012 but is essentially ready for viewing now.  The site has well over 525 artistic images from Route 66.  More than half are configured for T-shirts and other merchandise.  There are many other American Road images too--including more than 100 neon signs.

While artistic photography is the main emphasis, the blog feature offers several Route 66 travel-related suggestions and trip plans.  There's also a trivia section.

I'm based about 6 hours from the Mother Road and have traveled it all, some parts many times over the past decade.

I hope you enjoy kicking back this weekend and exploring the site.  And I look forward to taking part in your discussions here.

I'm Lindy from Sydney, Australia.  For years I have being dreaming about doing this road…  I've finally found a man who also wants to do it, so it's looking like I might soon get out of the dreaming phase!!  For now, I'm loving reading up on it, following others trips and enjoying the dream!!

And Frank, I've just checked out your website..  There are some amazing photos on there...  Awesome!

Hi all,

I'm Jeff from New York. Drove the Mother Road back in February of 2007 between McLean, IL and Santa Rosa, NM. My wife and I are currently planning a return trip in early 2012, tentatively now changed to roughly April. Anyway, I see some familiar faces here so I won't bore you with the details 🙂

We love to road trip, and we try to hit the road -- any road -- as often as possible.

Best of luck with your site, Steve. Here's hoping it benefits the community for years to come!

Jeff

Hello all. Name's Mike and I'm in Virginia Beach, Va.  The wife and I rode our Harleys from Coast to Coast and back via the mother Road in Aug/Sep of this year. We got on in St. Louis so we still need to do the leg from Chi-Town to St. Looey.  It was an amazing 3 week journey and we saw a lot of incredible sites and met a lot of great people. I am already planning our next trip and it can't come soon enough.  Steve the new site looks great and I am really looking forward to talking with all of you fellow fans of the Mother Road.  Viva Rt. 66!

Hi Jeff - welcome to the site Smile I too drove it in 2007 - it was fine year for road-tripping!

Mike - it's great to see you on the new-look site, you've always been a great contributor to these forums - in fact, so much so that I thought you'd driven Route 66 prior to this years trip - was this year the first time? (Oh and I'm going to take the liberty of moving your old avatar across - feel free to get rid of it if you don't like anymore Smile )

Hi Folks,

Im Alex, I'm 24 from Bridgend, South Wales.

Ill be travelling 66 on a Harley in  October 2012 and I'm trying to gather as much info as possible. Ill be setting off from Chicago on 29th September (after spending 2 nights in town) and I need to get to Vegas by October 8th. Vegas is already booked as well as San Francisco after that, as my friend from work is getting married in the Stratosphere on Oct 10th.

I know I haven't got a huge amount of time set aside, and I'm not worried about 66 west of Vegas as I've done that small stretch twice over the last 3 years. The furthest east I got on 66 was Flagstaff (beautiful town), and I don't think i can miss out a short side trip down to Sedona again either!

Anyway, I look forward to speaking to you all on the forum soon enough

Steve, this was my first time, but I had been a 66 fan for years and had done a lot of research, so much that I think I new most of the Route in my head before I ever got to it.  Can't wait to get back out there.  Hopefully I'll do the Chicago to St. Louis next year.  Unless I hit the lottery, then I am closing up shop here and heading out to find my new home in New Mexico or Arizona...On the Route of course...:-)

Hi everyone.

I'm Kelly from Norfolk, uk. I am completely new to the idea of travelling Route 66 but excited of the prospect of doing it!.My fiancé has said for a long time he wants to get his bike licence and ride the mother road so he will be starting in the new year. We are getting married in 2013 and are really hoping to book a trip to the US, do Route 66 with a stop off in Vegas to get married. Im hoping someone on this fab forum will be able to help us plan this trip (and wedding!) of a lifetime. I have looked at guided tours and not sure if this is the right thing to do or not. We are hoping there wil be 4 of us in total, potentially 4 riders or 2 riders with 2 passengers. Failing that, just the 2 of us.

Any advice would be a godsend as, to be honest, I have no idea what I'm doing!!

Help us get our kicks!!

Afternoon all.

My partner and I live in Essex and have been talking about doing route 66 for my 40th. After doing a little bit of research I'm not sure I can wait til my 40th , you never know what's round the corner and could drop dead tomorrow.

Plan is to take a month off, do the whole route with no schedules, Just a list of must do's.

Look forward to chatting to you all

Nathan
