Hi My name is Steve and I live in Scotland. My business partner and I are planning to ride Route 66 from Chicago to Los Angeles. He is a biker. I am not. So we thought we would do it on Trikes. Any advice/recommendations??
Do you think it is better to do it as part of an organised tour party or just set off and see what happens??
Any thoughts, plans or experiences would be welcome. Also is there a 'best time of the year' to do this?
I'm looking forward to sharing thoughts and plans!
Hello My name is Nicole. I'm an American living in Italy. It is my (Italian) husband's dream to road trip Route 66. We will be doing it this summer with 8 other friends. I'm trying to figure out the itinerary as we only have a very short time, 12 driving days to be exact.
Open to any and all suggestions. But I'm particularly stuck on the first leg of the trip which I feel should be done from Chicago to St.Louis in 1 day.
Frank here from Detroit. My buddie and I are flying into Lax on 09.09.17, already have a vehicle reserved and plan on leaving Santa Monica Pier headed east on Route 66 on Monday morning 09.11.17
We have three weeks to return the car back in Detroit and have a pretty good idea of what we want to see, along with side trips.
Our first night we plan on staying in Barstow, CA and had planned on staying at the Route 66 motel and finding at two months out this motel is booked for the night we need.
Our second night will be in Needles with a side trip up the Hoover Dam from there.
It does pay to plan ahead if you want reservations in ICONIC route 66 motels.
The Route 66 Dining and Lodging guide will help with the future reservations as we plan deeper into our trip.
We also used Auto Slash to book the car; this site saved us a few bucks that we will spend on cold beverage after a day of sightseeing.
I'm just starting planning our 66 trip for 2019. I'm a Brit living in Virginia, but I have a bunch of my UK friends coming over to join me, so I'm planning as early as possible, so we can get an idea on budget.
I've read most of this site already and now moving on to the forums 🙂
Hi all. My name is Stephen. I'm starting to plan my route 66 for June/July next year. Having rode 66 on a motorcycle in 04, with the mother road rally, I'm introduceing my son to the joy's of rideing the open roads of the USA. In 04 tarveled the 2,400+ mls of the road over 7 days, this time want to travel at a more leisurley pace and take in more of the sights and experiences.
As of yet we're undecided as wether to do it on motorcycles or a car, costs being major factor.
Watch this space!
Hi, my name is Agustin, I´m 48, I´m from Uruguay, South America, but I´ve been living in Paraguay for the last 18 years. I´m travelling to the States next august 9th with my 2 elder sons to take them to their respective universities. One is going to Kansas state in Manhattan city, KS, and the other is going to Notre Dame at South Bend, IN.

We are planing to sleep at the Route 66 Hotel and Conference at Springfield.
The 10th we´ll be driving from Springfield, IL to Manhattam.
latter the 15th I´ll be driving back to South Bend.
Any recommendations on the road will be highly appreciated.
Hi. My husband and I want to do the Route 66 trip probably next summer. We want to take our corvette. Can you tell me how much time we should allow going out and back from Chicago? We live in Northern Indiana but will pick up 66 in Chicago it looks like. This is a bucket list trip for us so I am trying to figure it out and just what will be involved.
My name's Richard ("Rich" is fine) and I'm originally from Aberdeen, Scotland, but now living in Bristol, England. I'm a keen biker, and a fan of Harley-Davidson motorcycles, and particularly enjoy touring with them. I've done trips around the highlands and islands of Scotland, Republic of Ireland, and into Europe (France, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway).
I will be riding Route 66 west-to-east in May 2018 with my wife (passenger) and stepfather. We've hired Harleys from Eaglerider, and planning to take a month to travel LA-Chicago, via Death Valley, Vegas, and with detours to, of course, the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley. If we can, we'll pop up to Milwaukee, WI, for the Harley-Davidson Museum (it has to be done!) We have old family friends in Oklahoma as well that we shall be visiting.
Looking forwards to exploring the forum and sharing stories with fellow travellers. If anyone lives along our route, or will be there at the same time as us, then please don't hesitate to say hi!
Best regards all,
Tina and Elaine here, From the North England we are planning to do Route 66 the End May 2018. Fights, and car hire and also a small number of hotels/motels along the way are booked. Spent the winter reading and planning so things seem to be coming along fine.
From Chicago to L.A. (Grand canyon and Vegas as well) hoping to navigate old route 66 as much as possible time permitting.
Any hints and tips will be appreciated.
Hi folks, my name is Sebastian and I come from Germany.
My wife and I will do the 66 end of may. We will start in L.A. and do the 66 kind of „reverse“ on Harleys.
We booked the bikes for 16 days and we are very excited and looking forward travelling the old Route 66 as much and close as possible.
At the end of our trip we will have 3 to 4 days for exploring Chicago.
Any recommendations are welcome and appreciated!
Kind regards from Germany,
Hi everyone, residing in UK, Hubby and me are planning our trip for 2018 in May. We are both retiring this year, so the freedom and adventure begins! Only just starting to gather info, as planning it all ourselves. I have a question. We plan to go from Chicago to LA, so thinking to fly into Chicago, and fly back from LA. Would this be possible on one ticket? All returns are from same airport.
We are planning our drive for some time in 2019 but we haven't settled on the dates just yet. Just beginning to gather information. We've got three kids, who will be 14, 11, and 5 or 6 (depending when we go). They are all road warriors and have traveled by car all over so I'm not worried about them handling the car time. I have so many questions and so many thoughts about this trip. I'd really love to drive one way and fly home but I don't even know how to do that with rental cars and that many miles and all that junk. So much research to be done!
Hi boys and girls myself and three others are arriving on 30th of march 2018 in Chicago from Nottingham uk.We are doing the full route in a mustang convertable, taking side trips to monument valley and Vegas, then on to San Fran. All in all 21days its a tight scheduel arranged through virgin holidays any tips on things and places to see,do ect would be great.
Thanks for now John.
john you need a bigger vehicle, four people stuffed in that car for 4000 miles, 21 days no place for luggage or legs. UGG!!!!
see my post "two best retired buddies" we did the route in 21 days without San Fran or Vegas and could have stayed out another week.
don't worry about looking cool in the Mustang worry about being comfortable.
Myself (from Yorkshire, UK) & my girlfriend (from Alabama), child and friend are doing the route at the end of May this year from LA to Chicago with additional detours to the Grand Canyon, Roswell and probably some other places along the way.
Hotels are already booked and the Hire Car (SUV). Really looking forward to this trip and any information I can get from this forum would be greatly appreciated.
