Just outside Amarillo, the quirky Slug Bug Ranch has found a new home alongside Interstate 40 near the Big Texan RV Ranch. Inspired by the famous Cadillac Ranch further west, this offbeat roadside attraction features a line of Volkswagen Beetles buried nose-first into the Texas ground, each one covered in layers of colourful graffiti left behind by passing travellers.
It’s the kind of classic roadside stop that perfectly suits this stretch of the old Route 66 corridor - strange, slightly chaotic and impossible to ignore from the highway. Visitors are encouraged to bring spray paint and leave their own mark on the cars, with the ever-changing artwork meaning no two visits ever look quite the same. If you feel like a good deed, perhaps collect an empty can or two and dispose of them at your next stop - some people tend to leave them laying about.
Open year-round, the site is easy to access with concrete walkways and disabled-friendly facilities, making it a quick but memorable stop while travelling through Amarillo. In the words of Ken Fisher who made this recommendation, it's "like the Cadillac Ranch only with VW Beetles"!

Unfortunately this was closed in late 2023! The beetles have however been relocated to nearby Amarillo (as of 2025), just west of the Big Texan. The new site includes other vehicles, and does not have the charm of the original, but atleast they still exist
