As a prospective early 2013 Route 66 traveller, I have been following this forum for some months now.  This website gives good advice to those wishing to drive into their piece of history.

It's just a bit of a shame that those who ask for assistance and who have since completed their drive, fail to give those of us who are waiting for our turn, a summary of their particular trip and hints or problems that they have encountered.

It needn't be a full and comprehensive description, just some insight into what should be expected and any problems during the journey.

Cheers

Geoff

Good point, Geoff. I got back 3 weeks ago but have been so busy that I haven't had much time to reflect on the trip, which is a real shame.

I promise to write a proper review with photos, stories and advice in the near future.

Top tip: AVOID Motel Safari in Tulsa.

Hi Will

Looking forward to what you have to say.  The information about the hotel is just the sort of stuff that does interest those of us who are doing the trip in the future.

Cheers

I draw a blank on the "Motel Safari in Tulsa" mentioned in a previous post.  There is a Motel Safari in Tucumcari NM…which is highly regarded and a favorite of Rt 66 travelers.

I'm just back from three weeks photographing the western half of 66, from OK to CA.  The California desert stretch is increasingly rough from age and, in places, lack of maintenance.  In one long section, ancient blacktop is just plain worn out and comes apart as you drive.  In a car, I was only able to do 25 mph (40 km/h) dodging holes, huge cracks etc.

Westbound, 66 from Needles to Ludlow is basically okay.

But–I would recommend leaving 66 at Ludlow and taking I-40 instead to Newberry Springs.  66 is right there and you can sample the few nearby sites.  You would then return to I-40, exit onto 66 again at Daggett, then use I-40 to Barstow.

66 from Barstow-LA is okay.

At the risk of offending those who have put up Route 66 signs en route: for whatever reason many are missing.  Signs (and painted on-road stencils) are only good for reassurance.  You need a guidebook or other reference source.

Mental blank... I meant the Desert Hills Motel in Tulsa.

The Motel Safari in Tucumcari was GREAT!
