I am going to travel from Cincinnati OH to LA in May or June.  Taking the southern route out and a northern route back.  I only have 2 1/2 - 3 weeks total but would like to spend at least 5 of the days in California.  I know this will cut my sightseeing time to a minimum but it's the best I can do.  Any suggestions on the best things to see on Route 66 and when to jump onto an interstate occasionally to make up some time?  I will be travelling alone (female) so also need to know if there are areas I should avoid staying in.

Thanks so much.Smile

s32144--

Considering logistics and time limitations, you might want to start just before St. Louis.  You could start enjoying Route 66 by walking the (Old) Chain of Rocks Bridge across the Mississippi River.  I-270 is right nearby and will take you into St. Louis for the night.

Two-weeks is a good one-way Route 66 trip for most people.  You would have time to see everything from St. Louis westward, spend 5-days in CA, and rush back via Interstate.

Trip outlines and some cautions are on my site referenced elsewhere.  If you hike the Chain of Rocks bridge, park only in the provided lot on the IL side.  And make sure there are other people around--the bridge can get deserted in off-hours.

You're close enough to Illinois that you can do the Chicago-St Louis leg of 66 some other time.
