Hi everyone, my name is Jim and I am just starting to gather information to plan a motorcycle trip for myself and 3 other biking buddies. We all live in Alberta Canada and will be riding from Calgary to Chicago to begin our Route 66 trip. We plan on doing this trip in September 2017 and take roughly 24 to 30 days to do the complete trip which will be roughly 4500 miles total. I am reaching out for helpful tips and info from people with experience. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Jim

Hi Jim, we are also going in Sept and planning our trip at the moment. We aren't on bike but tips i can give you are:

Get the EZ66 book by Jerry McClanahan, and combined with looking at the maps and places to see/stay on this website you can easily find what parts interests you most and work your trip out around them. The book EZ66 has lots of tips for bikes and indicates roads that aren't suitable, plus lists places of interest for bike enthusiasts.

We are booking in a few places after working out a rough mileage and timing plan, and leaving the rest to the road.

Its fun once you get planning - have fun!

Hi Jim, welcome to the site 🙂
I'd recommend booking your accommodation for every 3rd or 4th day just to keep you on track and to ensure you can get a room at the iconic motels - Blue Swallow, Munger Moss, etc... These can get busy, although in September you might be fine.
I'm hoping to post a list of top motels on the weekend - hopefully that'll be of use.
Steve

Drove Route 66 in August 2007 - hope to do it again one day in the not too distant future.

About Driving Route 66

What started as a record of my personal Route 66 experience has grown into an active community of Route 66 veterans and newcomers alike. This website relies entirely on the experiences of its users so please feel free to recommend your own personal favourites.

Every Route 66 road trip is unique, and this site is in no way intended to be a definitive guide to the old road. However, I sincerely hope it offers a starting point to anyone planning their own Route 66 vacation.
