Very early stages of planning our trip it is for my husbands 60th a surprise, not sure if my 16 year old and i can plan this without telling him.

firstly is March an ok time to go, weather wise?

could we easily do the chicago-la in 2 weeks?  is it easy driving?

we was going to book motels on route stopping when we felt like it, is this a goog idea?

how much would we expect to pay for a motel?

can anyone recommend a flight booking agent?

lots more questions to come, love the site!!Wink

Hi Nicky,

We are in a similar position, wanting to know if March is too early. Most of the coach trips do not start til June. A friend has recently completed a coach trip in 16 days, he thought several stops could have been left out and he would like to redo trip by car but wants to spend longer so he can visit other sites where his coach did not stop.

Good luckSmile

Have spoke to our local travel agent who I think I will book through and she said March this year in Chicago was the hottest they have ever had in the 80's. There are so many questions I need to's the unknown!Smile

We had a similar weather pattern here in Michigan...a very warm spring, and a cooler early summer. A little backwards, and very unusual. I would not bank on unusually warm temps in March.

March is very early, a month of transition weather with great variability year to year.  April would be better...May-June better still.  If you do go in March be ready for cold and quite possibly snow in IL and northern AZ (elevations there range above 7000 ft).  And some smaller places, such as the home of Tow Tater (Tow Mater) in KS--Four Women on the Route--will probably not be open that early.

Two weeks will allow for a nice road experience.  If you want to hit nearby attractions such as Branson, the Grand Canyon and/or Las Vegas--allow for extra time.  See the Travel section of my site: for a two-week outline that has suggested stops.

The driving is pleasant and scenic, assuming you enjoy two-lane roads and don't fret about getting lost a time or two.

Motels start in the general range of $40 a night (spartan) and go up from there.  For three people in one room you might pencil in $60...or more if you want added luxury.  (This includes local taxes that range widely and are NOT included in the quoted rate.)  This will also let you sample some classic Route 66 motels, also listed on the site.  You can get rooms at ordinary "chain" motels without reservations.  But reservations are highly recommended for the classic sites, such as the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari NM.
