Hi Nick

Some of those journeys are very long, e.g. Chicago to St. Louis along Route 66 is about 400 miles. It took me about 6 hours (including stops) to get from Chicago to Springfield (Illinois), so I think it's a little unrealistic (or at least rushed) to try to get to St. Louis in one day. Obviously it can be done, but it would be hectic and I imagine you'd be tempted to jump onto the interstate to save time, which defeats the point of the trip (for me, anyway).

Likewise, Holbrook to Las Vegas would be a long journey. Why not stop off at Flagstaff or Williams along the way? Both are beautiful towns with a real change in scenery (both are surrounded by woodland and the altitude/relief of the land makes them both interesting, especially Flagstaff).

I drove from Vegas to Los Angeles (well, the outskirts of Los Angeles, before heading south to Orange County) along Route 66. It took about 8 hours I think and was a long journey. Personally, I didn't feel like stopping much on that particular route; I personally think there is more to see and do on Route 66 in other states prior to reaching California.

Good luck with your trip planning!

Nick--I agree with WillC.  Springfield IL is a logical stopping place your first night out from Chicago.  That leaves time the second day for a stroll across the Mississippi on the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge...possibly the nearby McKinley Bridge too, if you have the time (and legs).

The rest of your trip looks good.  After Holbrook AZ, the next nightly stop could be Seligman or Kingman.  From Kingman it's 2 hours to Vegas via US 93.  This goes right by Hoover Dam on an equally spectacular new (2011) bridge.  If you return to Kingman the same way, you're in position to take the mountainous Oatman Road section of 66 down to Needles CA.

If you have the time, another night can be Barstow CA or San Bernardino.

If you go directly from Vegas to Los Angeles on the Interstate you will miss a great deal.

Getting the EZ66 Guide would be helpful at this point, but you've got the basics covered.

Nick--Holbrook AZ and Flagstaff AZ are just 90 miles (145 km) apart.  Since you've already seen the Grand Canyon, you could easily cover more on this day--reaching Seligman or Kingman AZ (both have adequate motels).  With either one you would then be in position to go to Vegas the following day (from Kingman via US 93).

Returning from Vegas, I would recommend heading back to Kingman.  So that day could be Vegas-Kingman-Oatman to Needles CA.  Oatman Road (Route 66 until 1953) is mountain driving, and Oatman is an old-west town with burros on the street.

Your next night could be Barstow CA or San Bernardino, then into Los Angeles.

Since you appear to have plenty of available time--consider adding another day in Santa Fe NM.  It's a unique and fascinating place, very tourist-friendly and walkable.

September is also a great time to do the trip.
