Doing the Mother road in April and will start in Chicago. Can someone reccommend a good map for planning purposes and also a Tom Tom or similar unit that would be helpful. We will be taking 4 weeks or more so as to be able to detour to see some sights. Thanks in anticipation,Big Bilko.Cool

Bigbilko--I'd recommend the EZ66 Guide (2nd Edtn) by Jerry McClanahan.  You can find it through Amazon at around $19.  This is @ 200 pages with detailed maps and historical information.  It's useful in planning and again when on the road.

You wouldn't need a Tom Tom etc., although some people prefer them.

I agree with Frank that the EZ guide is well worth buying.

However, I personally think getting Sat Nav/Tom Tom is well worth it, just in case you take a wrong turn and can't figure out how to get back onto Route 66 (this happened to us a few times and we were very grateful that we had Sat Nav).

If you already have Sat Nav in your home country, then you can probably download the USA software and just take it all with you, which is what we did with our British Sat Nav. It will only cost about $40 to do so, which is much cheaper than hiring a Sat Nav system out there (which will cost about $150).
