We are doing Route 66 a little different than most. Starting in Santa Monica, driving to Amarillo, TX, and ending. Doing Amarillo to Chicago at a later date. We want to see as much as we can. Do you have to make hotel, motel reservations in advance or are you able to find lodging at the 'last minute'? We don't want to miss something because we have to get to a hotel for check-in.
We drove Santa Monica to Chicago in September 2017 for 21 days. We booked all our motels in advance before we left for the trip. We found the more popular Route 66 authentic motels booked quickly.
Here are four that are a must, Stage Coach is old a bit creepy but it’s one of the originals.
Blue Swallow was the toughest one to book, we had to back track to take advantage of this one
El Rancho has big history and great food.
