We are doing Route 66 a little different than most. Starting in Santa Monica, driving to Amarillo, TX, and ending. Doing Amarillo to Chicago at a later date. We want to see as much as we can. Do you have to make hotel, motel reservations in advance or are you able to find lodging at the 'last minute'? We don't want to miss something because we have to get to a hotel for check-in.

Hey Sandy
We drove Santa Monica to Chicago in September 2017 for 21 days. We booked all our motels in advance before we left for the trip. We found the more popular Route 66 authentic motels booked quickly.
Here are four that are a must, Stage Coach is old a bit creepy but it’s one of the originals.
Blue Swallow was the toughest one to book, we had to back track to take advantage of this one
El Rancho has big history and great food.
You will have fun at the Big Texan

STAGECOACH 66 MOTEL – SELIGMAN, AZ
EL RANCHO HOTEL, NM
BLUE SWALLOW M Tucumcari NM
BIG TEXAN INN, AMARILLO TX

See my post “two retired best buddies on Route 66”

Have a great trip

About Driving Route 66

What started as a record of my personal Route 66 experience has grown into an active community of Route 66 veterans and newcomers alike. This website relies entirely on the experiences of its users so please feel free to recommend your own personal favourites.

Every Route 66 road trip is unique, and this site is in no way intended to be a definitive guide to the old road. However, I sincerely hope it offers a starting point to anyone planning their own Route 66 vacation.
