April--I can't find your bio information.  If you're already here in North America, I would strongly consider not trying to do so much at one time.  You've got three side-trips in there, a total of four nights.  And Colby KS is WAY off Route 66--it's practically in Nebraska.

But--if you're flying in from overseas and aware of the trade-offs, it's very rushed--but it will work.

After your night in Colby KS, you might want to substitute Amarillo TX instead of Tucumcari.  This will allow you to see the Cadillac Ranch.

There's also a lot to see through Oatman AZ-Barstow CA.  If you merely go from Las Vegas via I-15 to Barstow you will miss this.  The alternative is to take US 93 from Kingman AZ to Las Vegas and return the same way--then pick up 66 again to Oatman.

April--US 93 is about two-hours each way from Kingman AZ to Las Vegas.  It goes right by Hoover Dam on a bridge that opened a year ago.  You will certainly want to stop off, at least briefly.

Returning to Kingman puts you right near the beginning of the mountainous Oatman Road section of Rt 66.  It begins at I-40, Exit 44.  This takes you to the old-west town of Oatman, then down to Topock AZ on the CA line.

kPollard--I don't see your question or comment, only my quote.

Taffy--From Las Vegas, the answer is no.  It's right at 500 miles (800 km) from Las Vegas to Kingman, Oatman, then on to Santa Monica.  This includes both mountain driving around Oatman then urban driving through the LA sprawl--which extends past San Bernardino.

Oatman does not have lodging, so your best options for the night would be Needles CA or perhaps Barstow CA.  Needles would give you more time to enjoy the unique Oatman segment.  From either you could get to Santa Monica the next day.

Hi everyone, my name is Andy and I have just come across this website and it looks really cool so I thought I might seek out some advice.  Me and my wife-to-be Becca are doing Route 66 for our honeymoon 2 days after we get married on October 4 2013.  We are from Cambridge England and whilst I have been to the States, I have never driven nor been to any spots on Route 66 so pretty much a novice.  Below is first effort at an itinerary, please let me know what you think:

Chicago, IL 3 nights - Holiday Inn

St Louis, MO 2 nights - Hampton Inn Gateway Arch

Springfield, MO 2 nights - Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven

Oklahoma City, OK 2 nights - Hampton Inn & Suites Oklahoma Bricktown

Amarillo, TX 2 nights - Big Texan Motel

Tucumcari, NM 1 night - Historic Route 66 Motel

Albuquerque, NM 1 night - Best Western Rio Grande

Holbrook, AZ 1 night - Wigwam Motel

Grand Canyon, AZ 2 nights - Best Western Squire Inn

Las Vegas, NV 2 nights - New York, New York Hotel & Casino

Los Angeles, CA 3 nights - The Georgian Hotel

Hi we've decided upon our itinerary as follows, if you want to compare! We've checked the approximate mileage on Google maps and think this is quite a manageable itinerary. However we're anticipating some degree of flexibility and may either overshoot or arrive late to some of these destinations - without causing ourselves much concern! As you can see, we've added quite a bit onto the end of the trip. Again, we're not even sure where or when we're going to finish. We've committed to dates and destinations for picking up and dropping off vehicles and we'll certainly book the Grand Canyon accommodation.

Sharon--I responded to your itinerary in another thread and so won't duplicate it here.

Andy--Chicago to St. Louis can be done in a day...but you will miss a lot.  A better bet is to spend one of those nights in Springfield IL, roughly half-way.  Same thing with Springfield MO to Oklahoma City.  There's lots to see inbetween, and Tulsa OK would be a better choice on one of those nights.

I draw a blank on your motel in Tucumcari...perhaps you mean the Blue Swallow Motel or Motel Safari, both Route 66 classics.

And at the end of your trip, you will miss a lot by going directly from Las Vegas to Los Angeles...namely the unique Oatman Road section in Western AZ.  That's explained in other threads, and shown on my website: https://www.rt66pix.com.
