Well the books have been read and this is my very provisional planned itinery.I've visited both Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon a couple of times so I'm not really bothered about going again.
Chicago        3 nights
Bloomington 1 (Might be able to skip this and carry on to Springfield subject traffic)
Springfield    2
Cuba            1
Branson        1 or 2 ngts
Tulsa            1
Ok City         1
Elk City         1
Amarillo        1
Santa Rosa    1  or Tucumcari
Santa Fe       1
Durango       2 or 3.(I know its off track but looks a very interesting area)
Kayenta        1       ( for Mon Valley)
Gallup           1
Kingman       1
Needles        1
Santa Monica 1
The distance between Needles and S.Monica is approx 290 miles. Is it too long a drive in 1 day or should we stay overnight en-route?

Comments will be  most appreciated.

Congratulations fatherted! I'm sure you are going to have a great time.

I can't help but notice that your schedule has you in Illinois (my home State) for 5/6 days total. My slightly biased opinion is that there's a LOT to see and do in Illinois, so I hope you enjoy your time there.

I've posted this list before, so you may have seen it. But if not, this is my collection of "things to see/do" in Illinois along Rte. 66. It is by no means all inclusive, just what I have made note of, and have collected links to. Things bolded are in, or very near, Springfield. Enjoy!

Many thanks Dynodave, I will only have my Chicago hotel pre-booked thus leaving the remainder of the trip to do as and when we please. If more days/nights are required then it should'nt be a problem especially as were planning on staying in the San Diego area for a few days at the conclusion.

You don't mention whether you have been to Santa Fe.  If not, you might want to pencil in a full day there, it's a unique and fascinating place with great walking/shopping/dining experiences downtown.  Even the parking garages are beautiful!

Since you have ample time, I wouldn't do Gallup to Kingman in a single day.  Flagstaff is a better nightly stop, and allows plenty of time the following day for the unique Crookton Road segment, the tourist stuff at Seligman and so on.

Needles to Santa Monica in one day will mean you miss a lot.  You could instead stop in San Bernardino and sleep at the Wigwam Motel, a Route 66 institution that has been brought back to its former glory.

Thanks Frank,I had accidently omitted 3 nights in Flagstaff in the original itinery (is it pressure or excitement?).It's also looking like we'll travel from Flagstaff to Lake Havasu, staying overnight, before going on to Barstow.
