Hi all, I have 32 days left to go and my itinerary is set, but Im just wondering if there are some issues I might encounter as Im a first timer to this! I'm travelling from Chicago to Oatman, then back on myself to Vegas to see a friends wedding, so unfortunately I don't get to do R66 in California, but life dictates its constraints.

Im travelling via motorcycle (eagle rider) and I pick it up the night before I set off so i get an early start. I have some very long days in a few places and some very short distances to travel on other days, but I couldn't get any more time off work and there were some places I just had to stop the night and see, but since I'm travelling by myself i will be setting off at daybreak since i don't have much else to do.

  • Land in Chicago Thursday 27th Sep staying in the Palmer house hilton, so very close to the 66 start point. I pick up the bike on the 28th so I need to find somewhere secure to park it overnight, which may be rather difficult.
  • Saturday 29th - Chicago to St Louis - very early start and a very long day!
  • Sunday 30th - St Louis to Lebanon - short day for a break
  • Monday 1st Oct - Lebanon to Oklahoma city - another long day it seems
  • Tuesday 2nd - Oklahoma City to Amarillo
  • Wednesday 3rd - Amarillo to Tucumcari
  • Thursday 4th - Tucumcari to Gallup - dont know wether to go the boring way, or take the Santa Fe loop, but I am worrying the distance of the Santa Fe loop on that day may be punishing
  • Friday 5th - Gallup to Flagstaff
  • Sat 6th - Flagstaff to Grand Canyon
  • Sun 7th - Grand Canyon - Seligman - gets me back onto 66 and gives me lots of time to do some hiking in the canyon
  • Mon 8th - Seligman to Las Vegas - I am planning on going all the way to Oatman before backtracking ti Kingman to head to Vegas if time allows.
So if any experienced travellers can see any glaring issues in that travel plan I would appreciate the heads up before I head off!

Alex--With only ten days on the road, you're going to miss a lot, especially when you include the Grand Canyon.  That said, you're going at a good time of year.  And this trip will be a nice "sampler" of what Route 66 has to offer.

On Thursday the 4th: the Santa Fe Loop is well worth doing, the Interstate-40 alternative from Santa Rosa to Moriarty is basically just open country.  You can eliminate the smaller loop south of Albuquerque through Los Lunas, and head West on Central Avenue from downtown without missing much.  Mileage for the day is 370 (590 km).

Thanks Frank, I've kind of guessed my only reasonable days on 66 are going to be St- Louis to Lebanon, Amarillo to Tucumcari, and Gallup to Flagstaff, but whey hey, Im sure its still gonna be fun.

Think Ill take the Santa Fe loop suggestion, although I can see how i feel about the long milage by the time I get to the Blue Swallow and I can make the call the night before

I've just got fingers crossed now for some dry weather in Illinois
