Hi im from Northern Ireland which has to be the most boring place on this planet.....anyways, my boyfriend and i have been thinking about giving Christmas 2012 a miss and spend the money on a road trip in the USA.  We would be happy with any sort of road trip, but we are just a bit unsure of which one would be the best.  Also am i wise going on a road trip in the winter.......or is it just northern ireland that is freezing cold all year round.  Looking forward to hearing back from you guys 🙂

If you want to avoid freezing cold and snow--Route 66 would NOT be the place around Christmas.  I'd guess you'd be much happier in Southern California, New Orleans, or perhaps Florida.

If you flew to LA you could enjoy beach time in Los Angeles and San Diego with a side trip to Las Vegas via Route 66 (as far as Oatman and Kingman AZ)--getting a nice bang for your travel buck.

Then if you got the Route 66 "bug" after this sample--you could come back later and do the whole thing.  Late May-early June is the best time (because of warm but not hot weather combined with optimal daylight) followed by September.  The peak of summer would be in third place by my standards--but that's when most folks seem to go.
