Hi there,

I live in South Wales in the UK. My husband is 41, I'm 40 and we have 2 children who are 9 and 15. This is something we have wanted to do for a long long time. My first question is, is driving Route 66 a good idea with children? We have done a charity drive in Europe when they were both much younger, and we drove through 10 countries....but I wondered what everyone's thought are on this. My second question is, are 3 weeks long enough?

Thank you x

3 weeks is just right, in my opinion.

I think kids would really enjoy it, but there are times when they might get bored sat in the car for an hour or two without a stop. Most days you'll be driving for about 5-6 hours.

Lizzy--I agree with Will on both counts.  I think they're both well old enough to enjoy it.  The road is very family-friendly and there are plenty of stops where they can experience (not just see from the back seat).  Examples would include hiking across the Mississippi on the (Old) Chain of Rocks Bridge...enjoying an Oklahoma sunset (and some exotic soda) at Pops...and spray-painting at the Cadillac Ranch.

You can also include a drive-in movie and a car show.  Both tend to be June-September and the theaters are generally Friday-Saturday nights ONLY.

This site has a wealth of information, plus links.  And if you are considering a 2013 trip, you have plenty of time to plan.

Thank you both very much for your replies....you've both made me feel easier about doing it now!

The more I think about this, the more convinced I am that it would be a great trip to do with kids.

9 and 15 year-olds would surely love to see a massive meteor crater, a giant holding a hotdog, the world's tallest rocking chair, 72oz steaks, spray-painted Cadillacs, etc.

There's really something for everyone along Route 66.

Lizzy--Many Route 66 businesses and the like are highly seasonal.  And since you are from the UK you may wilt in a typical US summer!  Route 66 goes through the desert in AZ and CA, and a TYPICAL mid-summer day in Needles CA is hotter than the RECORD in the UK.  In fact the last half of the trip may be uncomfortable by your standards.  (Details in the Travel section at https://www.rt66pix.com.)

With that in mind--recommendations would be (1) May or June and (2) September, in that order.  With either, you get about 14 hours of daylight and you avoid peak heat of July and August.  You also have a better chance at desirable motels en route etc.  And everything will be open.
