Heading west from Chicago to St Monica. Then back, first timer all info would be great. Traveling the route at the end of May for two weeks or so.

Hi there and welcome
Chicago to Santa Monica...and two weeks!!
That's ambitious. A round trip of nearly 5000miles may require a Lamborghini Diablo, green traffic lights all the way and enough speeding tickets to distribute around a small village.

My initial suggestion would be to try and push the duration to 25-30 days but, as always, it depends on your circumstances. If not then the Interstate will have to be used for big chunks of the journey which is a shame. It's all about driving on that Mother Road. And it's a road that will slow you down to 20-30mph in places (if following 'old' 66).
