Perfect time to go. The heat will be starting to ease although still pretty hot. Depending on how long you give yourself, the desert states will be hotter than Illinois, Missouri, Kansas.

kanan, as Paul said September is a great time to travel Route 66. We have taken all of our trips then, and the weather is wonderful. You may even need a light jacket in the higher areas like Flagstaff, Arizona. But, it's still hot in the deserts as always. We will be doing Route 66 again this September, leaving North Carolina on Sept. 10th, getting to St. Louis on the 15th. If you see a silver Corvette convertible, give us a wave.
