Hi there Route 66 - ers
Can anyone offer me the best advice for one way car rental ? We fly into Chicargo O Hare and fly out of LAX - we are a family from Scotland UK and doing Route 66 next June and done a few USA drive hires but always back to the same place. Recommendations for companies that any of you may have used would be helpful
Thanks in advance
Apologies for 'hi-jacking' your thread but I'm looking for pretty much the same info!
Flying into ORD and looking to drop the car off in LA also. Our travel time is late May 2015.
I've tried looking on the comparison websites and some of the large providers such as alamo, budget, dollar etc however they don't have prices up yet for 2015 which is disappointing. Which websites etc DO have prices up? I've looked and looked but no joy. PS. WANT a Mustang - non-negotiable as this is a honeymoon we are going on
Also from Scotland... coincidence? Or are we just trying to escape possible independence!?

We are doing R66 next month, with a one-way rental ending in San Francisco. At the time I searched, the best price came from http://www.hertz.co.uk. There is a one-way drop off fee of about $560 payable at the local depot (I assume this is at the final destination).

No problem for the hi- jacking Mc X ;0) as we are English folk living in Scotland there is every chance we could be deported if independence comes off !!!! I have found Hertz to be the most reasonable so far ( thank you Chris for your info ) I was looking at MPV so not sure of the Mustang availability and every car hire company I looked at they did have 2015 prices available - we travel early June. 2015
Kindest regards Helen
Hi Helen,
Our reservation is for a Minivan (Dodge Caravan or similar) and the cost for 18 days next month is £590 prepaid, plus the $560 one way drop off fee. We are actually picking up at Midway airport, as we don't need the car while in Chicago itself, and reckon it may be more convenient / less stressful to just get a taxi out to Midway, which appears to be closer than O'Hare to pick up the mother road.
At the time we booked and prepaid, sterling was not as strong as it is now, so maybe the 2015 rates will not increase by much, if at all. Good luck with your plans.

Hi
We do USA about once a year - last time LA to San Francisco in May this year
So, picked up vehicle from Alamo at LA Airport car hire depot, (which is a distance from Airport via courtesy bus) - dropped it off 3 weeks later at San Francisco Airport car hire terminal (which is a courtesy train ride away from the airport).
All the car hire companies seem to use different levels in the same huge rental vehicle return location.
Additional cost for different location drop-off, (to this location) - Nil.
My experience has always been, unless you're dropping off a vehicle somewhere remote - I can't see why any BIG (national) car hire business in the USA would need to charge you more.
p.s. Petrol in USA is mostly about $4 - $4.20 a gallon right now. Most service stations have vending-machine-type pumps that will accept cards so you can pay without going to the cashier. Problem is, nearly every pump like this I encountered needed my ZIP code. I'm from Australia - my postal code was not recognised by the machine so I had to pay manually nearly every time.
Don't forget - to get petrol (GAS) in the USA if you have to pay in advance before they'll turn the pump on.
Because we had a rental I had no idea what it needed to fill the tank, so I just left the cashier my credit card and told them I wanted to fill the tank, then went back once I was finished to fix up the credit card transaction.
Hey Mcxtravert we've just returned from doing Route 66 ,we had a mustang convertible so was just going to give you a bit of advice on luggage space ,we managed to get one large case with 24kg in it and 2 small suitcases (maximum hand luggage size for plane) this is what we got in the boot with a bit of manoeuvring ,we were there just over 3 weeks and this was enough luggage for us,if I done it again I would have a mustang again, petrol was about $430 and we done 3200 miles and had a lot of comments about the car, we rented through Dollar but the drop off fee was $900 but hey its not everyday you do it .
Cheers Nick
