Hi Guys, As a surprise I want to hire a Mustang for part of our Route 66 journey. We are landing in Chicago from Ireland on Sept 16th this year and heading to friends in San Jose for Sept 28th ...... my head is melted trying to log into car hire websites.... please, please, can anyone do a bit of research for me to ascertain where and when (and for any period of time between those dates) we can hire a Mustang... I would love you forever!!!......... 🙂 @) xxx

Hi Maggy, and welcome to the forum. We have driven Route 66 in my wife's Mustang convertible. You will have loads of fun. And may I be the first to welcome you to the U.S.A.

BTW, my ancestors came to the USA in the mid 1700's from Ireland. My fourth Great Grandfather fought in the American Revolutionary war when he was a young man.

Hi Maggy,

My daughter and I drove R66 in March/April this year in celebration of her 21st; we had a fantastic time. I hired a Mustang convertible via Rentalcars.com (pick-up Chicago O'Hare - drop off LAX). Everything went extremely smoothly and upon pick-up, the agent drove the car round to the office; it had 3 miles on the clock when we collected it and 3,200 miles when we dropped it off two weeks later!

Unfortunately, the only drawback is the cost when you add the one-way drop-off fee which almost doubles the rental charge. I really do think that this is a rip-off because the further west we travelled, the more rental Mustangs we saw. In fact, when we got to the Hoover dam (on a diversion to Vegas), they were everywhere! Quite obviously there are people wanting to travel from west to east so I really don't buy the one-way fee. That aside, I'd wholeheartedly recommend the car. It was the Eco version and not as quick as my Focus ST that I drive here in England but it was a real pleasure to drive. And don't get me started on the fuel costs! I was filling up the car for an average of $26 which was getting us almost 300 miles!

I have some photos/videos of our trip (inlcuding lots of the Mustang) on my Instagram if anyone is interested in taking a look; I.D. Zephead2112.

Feel free to drop me a PM if I can help further.

Best Wishes,

Keith.
