Heh all

It has taken a fair few amendments but I think I finally may have got our Route 66 plan finalised - Lets hope!

We are a foursome from the UK looking at doing Route 66 in September this year and having spent a few goes at getting this right it would be nice to get some feedback from others who are more familiar with the route to comment on where we may have gone wrong or totally under estimated the reality of some daily driving stints I planned.

Three of the four are drivers so we don't have to rely on one poor soul doing all the leg work each day Cry

Day 1 - Arrive Chicago approx 10am

Day 2 - Chicago >>> Springfield IL

Day 3 - Springfield >>> Cuba

Day 4 - Cuba >>> Carthage

Day 5 - Carthage >>> Tulsa

Day 6 - Tulsa >>> Shamrock (Will not visit OK City)

Day 7 - Shamrock >>> Tucumcari

Day 8 - Tucumcari >>> Gallup (Will not visit Santa Fe)

Day 9 - Gallup >>> Flagstaff

Day 10 - Flagstaff >>> Barstow (Not visit Vegas \ Grand Canyon)

Now this is where it all goes REAL weird!
We have all been to LA before - not too keen on the place, seen it, done it - all that. So the trip goes a bit wild here..

Day 11 - Barstow >>> San Francisco!!

Day 12 - San Francisco

Day 13 - San Francisco >>> Fly to Chicago (Evening)

Day 14 - Chicago >>> Fly to UK (Late Evening)

Why back to Chicago? - return fares to Chicago currently are approx £560 - single fares are at present approx £800 - £1200 EACH way. £560 vs up to £2400

Internal flight back to Chicago from San Francisco costs approx £150, so in all still a LOT cheaper than two single fares or the non direct options that we have found.

I may have got all this wrong, so any input or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Happy travels Cool

David

David--

On Day 1, you get into Chicago at 10AM.  That's early enough to enjoy the road down to Springfield IL the same day--if you're not jetlagged.  (It appears you have sightseeing time in Chicago at the end of your trip.)

On Day 6, Tulsa OK-Shamrock TX can certainly be driven (285 miles or 455 KM)...but there's an awful lot you will miss, including Tulsa's extensive art deco downtown, three OK Rt 66 museums (Chandler, Clinton, Elk City), the Original "Radiator Springs" town of Depew, the Round Barn at Arcadia, and Pops right nearby--which is worthwhile only near and after sunset.

That's why a Tulsa-Oklahoma City day (just over 100 miles or 160 KM) is a better idea.  The following day would be OKC-Shamrock, including museum stops in Clinton and Elk City.

Perhaps starting your drive immediately on arrival on Day 1 would allow you to break up Day 6 into two segments.

You need 3 good weeks to travel rte 66. Find out all the main things you want to see and make a list. The biggest things are not always the best. Some things take 10 minutes and others take hours. Enjoy, drive slow, talk to people, take lots of pics and keep a record of what and where they were taken....download them every night to make sure you have an extra copy. (stuff happens)

Thanks Frank, looks like we may be able to add a couple more days to our trip now, so will take your suggestions on board.

Oh dear!

I have just discovered the multi city feature on British Airways website.

As long as you fly back to where you came from (UK), the fare is near enough a return rate rather than two singles.

Phew! - scratch the internal flight back to Chicago!

Back to the rescheduling!

Hi David,

We originally planned to do the same, and had planned to fly back to Dublin from Chicago, but found the multi-city feature on the Aer Lingus website also!

We have actually booked our return flight from New York - a 6 1/2 hour flight to Dublin.

We are taking an internal flight from Las Vegas to New York (5 1/2 hours), and spending a few days in New York before we fly home, which breaks the trip nicely for us.

The internal flights are not booked yet, but will amount to 300 dollars approximately.

I envy you people.  6 1/2 hours to travel from one country to another.  With the exception of Asia, all our international flights take 14 to 24 hours.

I remember when I moved to the Detroit area from Illinois, it seemed very exciting to have a "foreign country" [Canada] just a bridge away across the river...even more so when I drove over there for the first time, having officially visited a foreign country. Locals, having grown up with our great neighbors to the north, were less impressed! Laugh
