Hi all,
Enjoying the site and have used a lot of tips found in this forum to plan my trip! However, I have a question... My friend and I have 3 weeks for our trip, travelling Eat to West, and would like to detour to Memphis and see Graceland... Has anyone done this who could tell me how many days should we allow for the detour?
Thanks in advance!
According to Mapquest the travel time from St Louis, Missouri, to Graceland is four and a half to five hours. The distance is 300 miles using U.S. Interstate highway 55. If you do not mind missing the part of Route 66 between St. Louis and Springfield, Missouri, you could leave Memphis and travel to Springfield, Missouri to avoid backtracking to St. Louis. The time and milage to Springfield is about the same as from St. Louis, but the highway is not divided like I-55. Check on Mapquest for routes to Memphis from various Route 66 cities. Anyway you go at it, the travel time from Route 66 to Graceland and back to 66 will involve driving time of at least ten hours plus visiting the site. Wait time for the tours can be more than an hour depending upon the time of day and the day of the week you arrive.
Graceland website:
Hi Bayesface - your trip sounds very much like ours. We have 3 weeks in September this year and are detouring to Memphis. We've decided to stay overnight however, as Dennis1949 correctly states the 'missing bit' of 66 (i.e. Memphis back re-join at Springfield) is the best and shortest way back. We don't mind missing a small piece, in order to visit Memphis as it's unlikely we'll ever be back in that part f the USA again. I'm curious as to when you're doing your trip? We fly from the UK on Sept. 7th and are collecting the hire car on Sept. 9th. We're deviating at Kingman however and travelling through Vegas, DV then to Daly City, then heading to Malibu via Highway 1 to LA.
Good luck with the journey and hope you enjoy. B & C.
