Hotel Monte Vista, Flagstaff
Originally built in 1926 under a citizen subscription legislation, the Hotel Monte Vista soon became the place to stay for transcontinental travelers. For travelers and town folk alike, the hotel offered an oasis of lush surroundings and a chance to rub shoulders with the local and national elite. Located just one block north of famous Route 66, the Hotel Monte Vista has been home to thousands of adventurous and colorful characters, from bank robbers, to headlining Hollywood stars, Hotel Monte Vista has remained steadfast in its commitment to serve its patrons.
The Hotel Monte Vista remains a centerpiece for Historic Downtown Flagstaff.
Dozens of fine shops, restaurants, and businesses of all kinds, are within a few blocks and The Monte Vista Lounge offers live music on the weekends.
“We stayed at the Monte Vista in Aug 2011, and were really impressed by the Hotel, the service and the local attractions. Highly recommended!”

The Wigwam Hotel, Holbrook
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wigwam Motel in Holbrook is one of only three surviving “Wigwam Villages” in the US and one of two situated on Route 66 (the other being in Rialto, CA). The term “iconic” can be overly used when discussing Route 66 but in this instance is wholly deserved. Each “room” is a huge concrete tee-pee and has a genuine vintage car parked outside. The tee-pees are deceptively large - mine contained two double beds, a TV and full bathroom with shower.
I particularly enjoyed my stay here and, after a couple of weeks on the road, found my “happy place” lying flat on my back outside the tee-pee, staring at the sky! At night the neon sign comes to life and, combined with the retro accomodation and vintage cars, you’re transported back to the old road’s heyday. The area was peaceful and after a short walk to stretch the legs my wife and I settled in for the night with wine and chocs. I won’t be driving Route 66 without a stay at The Wigwam Hotel.

Best Western Pony Soldier Inn and Suites, Flagstaff
Okay, so it’s not quite as unique as a night in a giant wigwam but at least you know what you’re getting with a Best Western motel! It was clean, comfortable - and given that we opted for a King Suite - very spacious. However… be warned that the incessant honking of trains as they pass by every fifteen minutes will not help you sleep. On the plus side there was free wi-fi in the room and we were only a very short walk from the The Museum Club offering cold beers and live music. Oh, and there’s the pony sculpture to greet the guests too!
